I bought a used tank with wich I got a tetra HOB filter. It has use and throw type of catrige which has carbon in it.After few days of use we have to replace the catrige.I am wondering if we do that what about the bacteria. If we use new catrige does it affect the fish.I always dealt with AC and emperor400 filter which has separate catriges for carbon, foam and boi rings.

Why do you have to replace the cartridge?

If its dirty, you can rinse it out in tank water, which saves the bacteria, yet cleans out the gunk.

Throwing away the cartridge means you are losing most of your bacteria.

I have a small Tetra Whisper HOB filter. The cartridge is a white fabric that contains the carbon. I took the carbon out and I rinse the rest of the cartridge out from time to time. Also there should be a sponge that fits in front that you should never change.

The bio sponge is really what's meant to house the beneficial bacteria but it does also grow in the filter media.
Since I have an HOB with a double sided filter box I only change the filter media in one side at a time so the biological filter doesn't get too shocked or overloaded.
