This is only speculation, as I haven't used them, but it would seem that if you used such things that removed ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, too frequently, that your bacteria would not be able to survive, as ammonia and nitrite are food for the bacteria. I stay away from unnecessary chemicals and water treatments. You don't want to screw up the water's biology. If algae is your concern, buy a bristlenose pleco and do weekly water changes.
A lot of companies make a lot of money off people that think they need to throw a bunch of chemicals into their tank water. I own two chemicals: Prime and QuICK cure (just in case).
