I have 6 fry about 1 inch in length that are currently in a grow out tank. Do you think that it

would be o.k. to go ahead and put them into the main tank? The species in the main tank are

as follows, 14 demasoni, 3 yellow labs, 3 red zebra. The tank is a 75 with plenty of rock work.

The reason I ask is because I currently have 3 dems females holding and need room for all the

fry.

I would be careful but I don't see why not. I am surprised you are able to keep the red zebras in there. My red zebra has to live with my oscars because he is one nasty african. Killed all his tank mates. I would try it. Congrats on the demasoni.

I do it all the time, but they do have to work hard to get food.

(I don't know if this just happens to me, but in my experience, their growth slows down a bit when you put them in with the adults. I think my yellow labs have been the same 1 inch for like a year. :-? )

Yeah man the fry will be fine, you might lose 1 or 2. I breed yellow labs and i put the fry back in the main tank once they basically show color and assertiveness/aggressive behavior. Anywhere from a 1/2 inch to an inch is fine. Plus you need space for the dem's.

Do they spend their time hiding from the adults? IMO, I would say this is definetely because they are not getting enough food.

mhenderson5581, Are the fry from your fish? If so, are you sure they are pure lab? Red zebras can cross with labs pretty easily but maybe yours are to small to do that yet? If you're planning on keeping more than dem fry from your fish, I think I'd seperate the labs from the red zebras and maybe get another 10g. grow out tank too. I bet that is a real pretty combination of fish though :thumb: .

I've heard that before. I must have good luck with mine. They get along with their tankmates great. The only African I've had an unacceptable amount of aggression from is aratus.

When I add smaller fish to one of my tanks, (just added 7 PS. Blue Dolphins to my 120). I do a 50 percent water change, puting some of the water into a 8 gallon trash can, take out all the larger fish, put them in the can while I rearrange the rock and then add them back to the tank. They larger fish don't realize that they are going to the old tank. It is new to them, so they tend not to be as territorial to the smaller fish!. Good Luck.
