Hey guys. Im on my first cichlid tank. I have a 40gallon breeder. I use the Eheim Ecco Canister Filter. My question is how often do I have to clean out the filter???

I suspect it's going to vary with the stocking level of your tank, and how much gunk is getting into the filter vs. being vacuumed out with weekly(?) water changes. Certainly change it if the flow ever decreases. I've heard of people only cleaning their Eheims every 3 months, but I don't believe they were using the Ecco.

The Ecco was the first eheim filter I had. It was run on 55 gallon tank and I had it heavily stocked. I cleaned it every 2-3 months and it was rather gunky. It all depends on how you stock the tank.

I have the ecco 2236 on my 75 and I usually clean it when I notice change in water flow. It usually takes 4 to 5 months to start noticing that.
