Unless I haven't seen it I think penguin are made by marineland and are HOB's.really its for more carbon cartridges. When one is getting clogged move it forward after a light clean and add new one behind it. That way you keep the good stuff.

I find no reason for using carbon most of the time so just go with mechanical and bio media. For me the best is the blue/white bonded pad like Marineland sells. It lasts a long time and can be rinsed and reused many, many times making it less work. For those who can buy wholesale at heating/AC suppliers, there is a really cheap source for DIY pads. Air Handler brand blue/white media comes in super large rolls making it cost almost nothing. Many people will find it too large a roll to be practical on an individual basis but it would make a super place for clubs to work together to use a roll. Maybe sell it off as a fund raiser?
One source for smaller quantities:

One source for bulk media:

I plan to keep a roll on hand and as I meet people in the hobby, I cut off and sell to them.

The AirHandler material is 1" depth... is that a suitable depth for most applications to HOB and/or canister?
TIA

Negative on the one inch depth unless I posted the wrong URL. I use the 1/2 inch. I will admit --- I may have screwed it up but meant to post for the 1/2 inch. Either is available. I think it may come up to 2 ich but never needed that thick. I'll do a check and correct if needed.

The problem with buying the bulk roll is that it is not really very practical to cut it and ship to other places. If one only paid a dollar for shipping, the extra effort and time involved makes the bulk purchase not worth the effort to me. If a club has a stock and just hands it off at meetings, then it makes sense for me. For small users, the retail item will often make more dollar sense.
