I want to use this rock in a new tank, but wanted opinions on whether it was safe or not. I don't really know anything about rocks and after the article I just read I'm more confused than before on what types of rock I can use.

I think it's great looking rock, and probably safe. But then I am not a geologist. :(

That is limestone. I'm 99% sure. It is safe to use.

I know THR is limestone. If you're right, and I do believe you, then I'm pretty sure it's safe to use too. You just never know with stuff you put in your tank, I'd rather ask first than kill $200 worth of amazing fish because I took a gamble.

Yeah, I hear you Rasco. I had a bunch of rocks just a week or so ago that I knew was fine, then got nervous because we just don't want to screw anything up. I did a lot of reading on rocks and how to identify them, and I'm pretty certain that is limestone. Here are some google images of limestone that might help put your mind at ease.

It comes in many different shapes, sizes, and colors. I was shocked when I saw the variations.

I also used this next website to help me id the rocks I was putting in my tank.

There is some good info on that site and a step by step Q&A to help you ID the rock. But in the end, turns out it really doesn't matter as Tim (prov356) points out to me in this thread of discussion.

Most any rock you find is aquarium safe, especially if you are putting it in African Rift Lake setups.

Threw a lot at you, just what I've learned. Hope it helps. :)
