I just got a 2229 off Craigslist unit was basically new, previous owner threw out the media and online I see 3 or 4 different product available all pretty expansive, are there alternatives or do I need to order the Eheim stuff? Also how much substrate for each basket?

I have a 2229 & use Eheim Substrat Pro(looks like coco puffs). Eheim only recommends that or the Ehfisubstrat for this filter as it's biological ONLY.

It takes 6L total. 2L for each tray.

Hopefully you got the instructions for this unit. It's very picky on the minimum/maximum heights when installing it. But it is a great bio filter. I've had mine 3 or 4 yrs already.

I have one one my 75g that has the 2 bottem trays filled with Ehfisubstrat. The top one is filled with dollar store pot scrubers. really nice to be able to pop open the 2229 and pull 2 or 3 of the scrubers out to "seed" a new tank
