Weird Question With Peacock and Haps

171 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Captain Moe
So getting my guys into a 125 next month and today I put my guy from quarantine that healed up back into the current 75 gallon while doing a water change.
Have you guys ever seen other tank mates (peacock and haps) have 2-3 stick close to that one guy and almost look like they were protecting him? I wish I recorded but I was just amazed how those 2-3 fish would not let any others near him. They chase the quarantine guy or nothing just floated with him and kept others away from him as if they swam too close, those 3 guys would chase intruders away from the quarantine guy.
I was just amazed and never seen anything like it. As I type this everyone just went about their ways.

Cichlids do all kinds of interesting things. I’ve seen things like that too. At first it may look like they’re protecting him, but I think it’s more likely that they were sizing him up while keeping the others from getting involved.

Usually they flare out their fins to make themselves look as big as possible when they do that. It’s pecking order behaviour.

That's another weird thing, nobody's fins were flared lol.
They don't form relationships. As marten said, there was SOME natural behavior behind their actions, just not sure what. Are you sure the fish being accompanied is not a female?

100% no females. After a few hours went by after the water change. Everyone went back to swimming
