How often do you change the water in the tank. I have only changed it probably twice since I have had it in July. I take water samples to the Fish store that specializes in cichlids and they say my water is perfect. I have a high PH balance naturally in my tap water.

I just want to make sure that I keep the fish as healthy as possible.

You want to change water to remove nitrates. If you don't have a water testing kit already I suggest you get one. You can either get test strips or the API testing kits that use test tubes and liquid solutions.

The frequency of your water changes and how much water your change depends on your nitrate concentration.

+1 to that.

If for some reason the Nitrate in your water manages to stay under 20ppm without water changes (heavily, heavily planted tank?) then you are one lucky person.

Here is a good article on the Nitrogen cycle of which you may or may not be aware. It's good to watch your pH, but tracking Nitrates is a must if you want to declare your water 'healthy.'
