Differs slightly from T. macrostoma in that the bulge on its snout is halfway between the eye & the tip of the snout, whereas in T. macrostoma, this bulge is closer to the eye. The southern variety differs from the northern variety in that the vertical elements of their banding pattern is not as strong. In the wild, this fish hunts by ambushing adult mbuna from behind a rock. Mouthbrooding females linger near the male's territory, where (it is hypothesized) she is protected by him. She will continue to take fry back into her mouth for up to 6 weeks post-relase, abstaining from food for this entire period! |
