Differs slightly from T. nigriventer in that the bulge on its snout is closer to the eye than the snout, whereas in T. nigriventer, this bulge is at the midpoint. In the wild, this fish hunts by ambushing adult mbuna from behind a rock. Mouthbrooding females linger near the male's territory, where (it is hypothesized) she is protected by him. She will continue to take fry back into her mouth for up to 6 weeks post-relase, abstaining from food for this entire period!
