i think you would be perfectly fine have a few. you could do one male and alot of females or you could have a tank with only males.

cool i am thinking about adding one of these species:

Aulonocara maylandi
Aulonocara maulana
Aulonocara sp. "Lwanda"

The Aulonocara maulana would be your best bet, they stay pretty small. I wouldn't put A. sp. "lwanda" in a three foot tank, they can get pretty large and aggressive as far as peacocks go.

I agree with Joea. You want something smaller in a 3ft tank and less aggressive and Aulonocara maulana are perfect for this
