Hello all,

I recently purchased a 40-gallon breeder and would like to know is using Fluval 406 overkill. I plan on keeping dwarf mbuna.

I have not used that brand/model filter but think you should be just fine using it on a 40B tank. It won't be too much filtration and you should be able to adjust or direct the output nozzle to determine where the flow goes.
We have two 40 gal. breeder tanks with a 406 on each one. I would consider this to be the minimum filtration for this size tank. Both tanks are doing very well.
A Fluval 406 definitely is not overkill.
