So I currently have 3:1 Chindongo saulosi in a 46 bow front. It's 36" long. One female was holding, and I now have 17 fry about 1/2" long.

I have a 48x18x13 acrylic tank (48g) laying around and was thinking they'd love the extra foot of length, but I'm losing 7" in height. Going from 20 to 13" seems like a lot. It's the only species in the tank.

Has anyone tried mbuna in a shallow, 13" tall tank?

The width is actually more important than the height. 48" would be better than 36" for most Mbuna. The saulosi are one of the few that would be ok in the 36" wide tank. If you changed to the 48" you could add another species, like yellow labs.

I have mbuna in 13" tanks, they are fine but keep them covered even more thoroughly than the taller tanks.

Yes they jump even in tall tanks. If they chase, they jump...accidentally.
