I am curious if anyone here is familiar with what chemicals are used for each of the primary water tests (in particular, thinking about the API test kits).

Nitrate?
Ammonia?
kH?

I tried Wikipedia for Nitrate tests, and they describe 3 different common tests, but none of them sound like they're likely to be what is used in the API kit.

Thanks. This is primarily out of curiosity, not related to any particular urgent need :)

I think that information is probably a secret, If it wasn't people could go buy the chemicles for $0.50 and not buy the kit.

API's scientist is a member of my local aquarium club, and if I asked him what the chemicles are, he would probably tell me "bottle #1 and bottle #2"

Have you tried the manufacturers website? I suspect ingredients are listed although not proportions. Good luck

You can download the MSDS (material safety data sheets) for API products here. It does list some of the ingredients plainly, but also lists some as proprietary.
