So, i have a 30 gallon tank that is right now being used as a community tropical tank and i have been thinking about getting rid of them and getting some convicts. I have never owned any but i always liked them. I have a Malawi tank right now but i have heard that adding convicts to that wouyld not be a good idea. So is a 30 gal big enough for convicts? If so, how many could i put in there?

Or you could add a single convict with your Mbuna.

IMO, you would enjoy the convicts more if you had a pair in their own tank. Plus if you have the pair of them in your 30 gallon then you can feed the fry to the Mbuna if you don't want to keep them or try to get rid of them.

But that is just my two cents. Good luck.

Agreed! I added a 4in and a 3in both Male Convicts to my Mbuna which consisted of Kenyi and Arautus and the Convicts were the biggest out of them all and they were pushed around and had torn fins. They truely looked miserable! I would advise not keeping Convicts with Mbuna. Infact I wouldn't advise any CA and SA for that matter with Mbuna not just because they wont be able to handle the aggression but I don't agree with mixing cichlids from other continents together. It's just not natural and unfair to them. Our job as aquarists is to keep our fish happy, healthy, and to keep their enviornments as natural as possible. The common saying that goes around is, "It isn't cruel to keep fish in aquariums if we keep them happy, healthy, in natural enviornments, and keep them with compatible fish that around found in the same waters." I would agree that keeping the pair of Convicts in the 30 would be AWESOME enough! And will work great and you will be happy that you did it this way and so will they! Like Cage stated keep the pair in the 30 gal and then feed the fry to your mbuna! :)
