I am thinking of setting up a small tank for a pair of blue rams and maybee some corries.

What is the minimum size you would recomend?

I've kept pairs of rams in 10g tanks, but it doesn't leave much space for females to hide, nor much room for error when it comes to water quality. A 20g long would be perfect, IMO.

a 10g is the minimum, just decorate it with a lot of plants and driftwood and you will be ok. but bigger is always better.

sand or gravel?

what other cichilds would you recommend keeping with them??
In a 10g tank? None.

In a 20Lg? possibly a pair of apisto's or checkerboard cichlids at the most.

The thing about stocking small tanks, is it often comes down to how many dither fish and what types you mix in with your pair of cichlids.

Also Blue rams do like warmer water, more than many other cichlids and SA fish can handle over a long period of time. Fish will survive at higher temperatures, but often live shorter lives.
But you could do some investigation and find out what other fish are found in the wild with Blue rams, look at doing a rough biotope tank.

Good luck.
