Woke up to a dead Jalo reef female this morning that had been holding.
I was meant to strip her on day 18 but forgot and it's day 23 today.

Water parameters are all fine, first thing I checked.

On inspection I can't see any sign of her being attacked, checked in the mouth and no babies
Looked underneath her and there was a very slight bulge.
Could she have swallowed them or is it likely she spat them and then tried to defend them from being eaten..?
Or something else.

Something very similar happened about 4 months ago when I lost another, she had been holding too.

Something else. Swallowing the babies or defending fry would not kill her.

While she was holding, she could have been harassed throughout and just been weakened over the 28 days. Next time strip at 18 days and/or isolate her 7 days after she starts holding.
