am starting two 30 breeder tanks one with julies and the other with shellies

want to use sand for the shellies (brevis) and crushed coral to my julies (regani or marleiri)

using coral to help buffer my ph, will the shells in with the shellies also buffer the ph

first time with either substrate and fish so all comments are appreciated

thanks to all

Well I'm not sure about the shells, I would say so, but I use crushed coral and it buffers really well, but I am sick of how it looks. I think Aragonite sand is a good buffer as well

i used crushed limestone in my big tank and it keeps the ph very stable and it looks good after a year or so too.check my tank link to see it.im not sure if the shells would buffer very much or very long, unless you have tons of them in there.maybe you could mix some of the coral in with the sand?

Maybe mix some argonite with the sand, would buffer the water and the small grain size would mix well with the sand.

I'm using a mix of argonite and crushed coral. I like the look and it seems to be buffering well, but my tank has only been running for a couple months.
