I use aragonite in my shelldweller tanks, but pool filter sand would also work. I would stay away from play sand, it can contain a lot of dirt, even if washed well, and with fish like occies it can wind up making your water cloudy.
Substrate for Occies
I'm preparing my tank for shell-dwellers (occies) and I'm not sure what to use for substrate. Many cichlid keepers use aragonite; in fact that is what I have in my N. Pulcher tank. Other cichlid keepers use play sand. Since the occies like to push the substrate around, I am looking for recommendations/suggestions.
