I am in the process of setting up a 140 gallon tall cichlid aquarium and need some substrate advice. I would like to have a few live plants like anubias or java fern included in the tank so I would need something that can support them. I would like to use mostly sand or a small grained substrate if possible.

I was thinking about buying some pool filter sand with some eco-complete but I don't know if I am going in the right direction.

Both anubias and Java Fern are not root-feeding plants. Their rhizome cannot be buried without negatively affecting the plant, and as such, your substrate doesn't matter to the plants.
