Hey Evan,

The substrate should not be a problem. Oscars, from my observance, tend to get bored and put gravel in their mouths often when they landscape your aquarium for you.

I'm not sure how big your current aquarium is but make sure that if it's < 75 it's pretty small for 3 Oscars and although you will likely be ok until Feb/Mar you should ensure waterchanges are frequent. I've found that they get exceedingly messy/dirty as time goes on and bad water conditions = bad oscar health. I'm not trying to imply this is the case just some helpful advice from a fellow oscar owner.

Make sure you seed the new tank when you have it setup with water, and if possible some filter media like a sponge or something to help the cycle move along. Your Oscars will likely be closer to the 6" mark by then. It's usually a little later in the Oscar life cycle but if you're correct about the pairing (I personally think its a little early but....) you might be seeing some aggression towards the "outsider" before too long
