I have kept cichlids for a few years now and I have noticed this from time to time but never thought to ask until now. I see my fish randomly rub one of their sides against the substrate then go on about their business, they only do it once and I see it happen once a week or so, I assumed they are just scratching or possibly trying to stir up food butwanted to make sure that is was somewhat "normal". I see not spots or splits in their fins or any other evidence of any other kind of sickness. Thanks

It's normal. They do it for the reasons you mentioned but also as a means of displaying/communicating to the other fish--'I'm looking to spawn, I'm looking to fight, I'm aiming to claim this entire half of the tank", etc. They will also do it right after a water change and this may indicate that there was a change in water parameters that was perhaps to big.

If you see them start doing it constantly to the point where their fins and skin start to look shabby then there may be a problem.
