I am really considering starting up a tank, i have read alot of things and talked to people, after talking to people i was told to go with all males ( i have a 40g, want relatively peaceful and color)does anyone have any suggestions on what to add, and how many (that sort of thing) i also read alot of sand bottoms, is that people usually use?

since you say "all male" I am assuming you mean a Lake Malawi tank. I think the best thing for you to do would be to check out the cookie cutter section for stocking advice. Below is the link.
