my african tank with new lighting has an overgrowth of algea. should I go with snails or a small pleco? I do not want the fry or eggs eaten up. brichardi will lay many eggs, and I have a feeling the pleco will munch them every night.

You might find a different method of control more successful. Spawning brichardi will kill most everything in the tank.

Keep your nitrates low (around 10ppm), don't overfeed, limit the hours your lights are on and scrape whatever is left.
