i bought a gold saum about 9 months ago, at the time he was 12cm, since then he has only grown about 2.5cm ( 1 inch ), is this normal, are they known to be slow growing fish and is it likely he won't get much bigger? He's in a 100 gal with a 10cm blue acara and a 20cm oscar and is fed well.

They are fairly slow growing but that seems a bit off - keep your nitrates under 20 ppm if you can - under 40 ppm if you're having troubles doing that with the large messy fish.

Perform weekly water changes of no less than 30%.

Feed a varied diet - always check the back of your fish foods for protein content. Brands like New Life Spectrum, Hikari, and Dainchi have significantly more protein than generic brands you can find.

It's important to vary the diet - don't just feed the same pellet all the time, mix it up - one day feed hikari, the next feed new life spectrum, the next day algae waefers ect.

in that case i should have said lots, not well, i've had trouble getting him to take most pellets except for the tetra color bits, which he still eats with poor attitude, so i feed those every second day rotating with another top shelf pellet with bloodworms occasionally which of course he loves. I once had a GS that died of malnourishment because he'd only eat the bloodworms and i never spoiled either fish???? :-?
