I am a newbie in raising cichlids and got a pair of demaonis that were breeding regularly but unfortunatley, the male died about 4 months ago. However, the female is laying eggs like every three weeks. She would still hold the unfertilized eggs in her mouth for like 5-6 days and then drop them. I would like to get another male fish and myabe a few more females but there is only like one store in town that has them but I am on my own in terms of picking them out. Any suggestions on how to tell the males from the females? Also, will the female demosani breed with other cichlids in the tank? She hasn't in the months since the male demasoni died. Thanks.

No sure way to sex them apart from behaviour (i.e you see two fish spawning or a fish carrying eggs) or venting when they get bigger.
They can cross breed with other mbuna but depends on what their tank mates are.

Also, do reading on fish first before buying. You'll realise then that Demasoni kept in small groups or pairs is often a recipe for disaster. You'll find that 99% of people keep them in groups of 12+. The more the merrier.
If you can't keep at least 12 in a decent sized tank, then I's say don't bother with any.

Lots of good info already on here, just use the library and the search option.
