How old, large does it need to be to get a good sexing from?

It really depends on the Dempsey... by the time they are sexually mature I completely trust the gill plate method (females have blue blotches, males have no blue on the edge of the gill plate)...

When they are "too young" then the edge of the gill plate has the same coloration as the rest of the gill area. As they mature females develop the blue blotches and male's turn pale...

Your fish appears to have pale gill plates, which indicates male, but as a young fish there is a slight possibility for this to change, although I doubt it...

I'm rather confident it is a male, but I will still say "probably" simply to allow room for error...

PS - the first time I posted in this thread expressing it looks like a female, I had not clicked the pic to enlarge it...
