As I have stated before, I am a complete novice.

How do I knw what sex my convicts are? There are 5 cichlids in the tank, 2 yellow ones, 2 which seem so be convicts, one of which is a beautiful colour etc, but the other is really dull. I first thought this might be an indication that it is female?But now Im not sure. The 5th fish is an ugly black-brownish looking fish?

This is my gfs tank and the fish were just sold to her at a petshop without any explanation.

The female convicts have orange on thier bellies. I wish all fish were as easy to sex as convicts

Can you post some pics? We may be able to tell you what all of them are and what sex they are.

Will do as soon as I have a camera. I have 5 cichlids, and I have IDed only 2 of them positevely.

convict males have longer fins.... that are pointier.... the color really doesn't matter... one might be a better quality fish, dominant etc.... females have rounded fins and yellow tummies if they are pink and red if they are striped

Some races of convicts have the male keeping a copper color on their bellies though ... even at 3 inches. Yes I'm sure it's a male given he's bred with the female. :lol: No I don't have piccies becuase I don't own a camera.

But the fins are very easy to tell on my pair.
