I have to move a holding female to a fry tank I'm going to buy. I currently have a 55 gal with two cascade 1000's. The 55 has a big bio load I'm guessing as it's stocked with 20 or so fish. In those cascade's I have two bags of bio rings in each, and one coarse sponge filter in each. Let's say I get a 20 gallon or so, how much media should I put in the new tank without hurting the old tank?

I would try one bag of bio-rings.

Once I put that in and fill it with water should I add ammonia to make sure it's cycled? Or how long before setting it up can I introduce the holding female to that tank?

I would add ammonia to test first if you have time.

I have moved half of the media to a new tank and old tank was always fine, and I added new fish right away, feeding sparingly the first week. In this case I guess you are not feeding anyways.

I think this is more like 1/6 of the media. But one holding mom versus 19 adult fish.
