Yes, it will work. Whether I recommend it depends on some things. I've used it in two different tanks and found different results each time. The sand varies a lot from time to time. It is not a sand that has much if any specific standards. Pool filter sand has to be a certain size and has to be clean. All purpose sand can be quite different. The last tank, I ran into trouble getting it rinsed clean. After it was in the tank, I had a terrible time with what I feel was dirt in the sand. A grey layer would form just under the surface of the sand until I stirred it into the rest of the sand. I also had far more algae problems in that tank than any before. I don't know that it was the sand but I find nothing else to blame. I may not use it next time.

I tried to rinse this sand and it sucks... I ended up going with a $6 bag of pool filter sand from home depot. Much cleaner, much heavier.
