can i add crushed coral over my sand or do i need to remove the sand?

Why not? There are really fine crushed coral substrates you can get which are similar to sand. Why do you think it will be a problem? Maybe you should use sand in one section of your tank and crushed coral in the other? The fish might mix it up anyways... It's their house afterall. Do you need to add crushed coral? If so, why?
