my guess would be for females a 29 and for mles a 30.
Well it depends on what you are planning to do. Are you wanting to spawn? If so a 40 gal breeder +. Or are you going to have a single Salvini or a community? Community you will need also a 40 gal breeder +. And for just one Salvini a 29 gal should be fine! You might find yourself wanting to upgrade later on in the future but a 29 should hold out for a while!
got a 33 gal now that may just be too little for a pair? ;)
Anyway, can any1 suggest a good cichlid for the 33 gal, well planted?.

Yep! I wouldn't try it! I have heard of people breeding them in 30 gal's. But it's not in the matter of opinions. It is too small. You could try a young pair of them but then would need to upgrade soon!
IMO, males should have a 40g breeder. Some of those guys can get very bulky. 40g breeder would also be good for a breeding pair.

and a 33 gal is too little for sajica? :?
No I think a 33 gal would fine for either Sajica or Rainbow's.
