It sounds like you are doing something wrong. There can't be any pressure in the hoses since they are open on the other ends. I can't see how there could be significant pressure in the cannister either. Make sure that you have the lever all the way up in the closed position. I mean so that the valves are closed. Also make sure that there are no foreign objects in the top of the cannister.
