Same as almost all Malawi cichlids, young males higher up in the pecking order start getting male characteristics near 2". Fins get more pointed, and a little male color. With Borleyi males the sides start to show some yellow to reddish orange color, while the face gets a little shiny dark blue. Female fins keep the color better. If a fish has no adult color it is not a guarantee of being female, could be a subdominant male afraid to color up.
