My tank had a small ammonia increase so upon doing the water changes etc i noticed my ph increasing now it seems a batle to keep it around 8, if i let it go it would be 8.8 easily which is what the PH of the tap water is after testing it. I use malawi buffer, any other suggestions, I am in the uk

No need to buffer if the ph is at 8.8 out of the tap. I wouldnt try battling the ph. Your PH out of the tap is fine. Save some money and dont worry about the buffer. My concern would be, why the increase in ammonia. I am assuming the tank is cycled.

the ammonia IMO wa due to adding 6 new fish and me feeding them a bit more than usual all in one hit, i was running a small internal filter through the fishless cycle and at that time aded a big uncycled external. Now the external is running on its own and ammonia has not moved the last 2 weeks and have added 3 fish but am still feeding just one block of food per day

By the way, last week five of the fish were going to the top of the water getting air, could this have been related to the high ph?

Probably related to the ammonia or did you have a nitrite spike as well? Mine go to the top with as little as 0.5 Nitrite.
