Hi all- new to cichlids. Been keeping freshwater planted tanks for about 5 years. I have a 55gal tank that is ready for stocking, and I have been looking at the cookie cutter recommendation list for stocking. My plan is to stock my tank with Lake Malawi mbunas- and for stocking it, should I mix males and females? If so, 1m/3f ratio?

Stick to 3 species and stock 1m:4f of each. Less aggressive mbuna.

I have had a 55 gallon Mbuna tank up and running for nearly 3 years now. I have 1m/4f Yellow Lab, 1m/3f yellow tail Acei, and 1m/4f rusties. Along with 6 synodontis lucipinnis which are actually my favorite, along with the yellow labs. I haven't had any aggression issues and they are producing fry like crazy. They are really fun to watch. I would suggest getting the Synos so they can go out on fry patrol otherwise your tank will get out of control. I still have a lot of fry survive even with the Synos.
