What size are your clowns? They can grow over 12" long and like a lot of running room. If they are still small, they should be OK...but they will eventually need a larger tank.

Personally, I wouldn't mix loaches with Africans.....but there are mixed opinions on this issue and some have had success.

The loaches will fine they can seem to adjust to the water qualities of our africans and don't seem to bother the fish either or get bothered for that matter.

They can get large and are very social usually hanging out in schools so keep that in mind and due to the tank size you would be better off getting them reasonably small.

I think that the clowns would contrast very well with the Saulosi colour wise and they both have the same hyper-active qualities which is quiet appealing

The clowns are still small. They are only about two inches a piece. I only have two and they used to be in a 15 gallon tank. The tank is pretty much a 24X24" cube with the corners hacked off.

That seems a little bit on the small side to be keeping clown loaches in for any long period of time - I wouldn't do it unless you have a larger (like a 55 gallon) tank to move them up to once they hit 4" or so. But even a 48" tank is going to be too small to keep a full-grown group of clown loaches. One way you could do it is try to sell the loaches once they outgrow your tank, then use the money to buy more small ones. The usual size of clown loaches I see in stores is about 1", so some people might well be interested in buying larger ones from you. But for now, you should be fine with them as long as the water chemistry isn't too big a shock!
