I have a female protomelas which I assume is a fenestratus because it seems to be the most common but they all look similar to me. If it isn't, is it even possible to cross breed with a fenestratus?

Its not good to crossbreed because identifying is difficult as it is.
You should not assume its a fenestratus because P.taeniolatus is equally common.

You can post a picture and we can try to ID it for you.
