Is a Protein Skimmer too much for a 55gal cichlid tank ? someone gave it to me and I have never set one up - not sure if its too much for this tank. Your thoughts ? benefits / drawbacks ?

if it is a salt water protein skimmer, it won't do much other than aerate the water.
What sort of skimmer is it?

its a Sealife Skimmer - with a pump attachment on the bottom. Sits inside a Wet/Dry or on its own. Sorry wish I knew more about it.

Has to do with the lower density of freshwater resulting in it's inability to form the microbubbles needed for it to be effective. Some claim success getting them to work somewhat. If it was free, and in my hand, I'd be tempted to run it just to see what it would/wouldn't do. But, I'm assuming you have a sump to run it in. If not, to eBay it goes :) .
