I bought my last 55g from craigslist and with that came two Powerheads that I really haven't used because for some reason they just wouldn't push any water.

So while I attempt to figure out what's going on with that I had a general question.

Ok, my power heads have the black tubing like the one above that's near the output of the powerhead. My question is, is that black tubing with the valves at the end necessary? I ask because on my powerheads I can't get the tubing to stay in the hole...the tubing always falls out.

the black tubes are for air, so you dont need them, just make sure the directional thing is point at the surface, to agitate it. the reason why the powerheads aren't moving anything is most likely becuase they are clogged\dirty, try separating the bottom from the top (turn the inlet\outlet thing on the bottom) then clean the impeller (magnet with blades, looks like a propeller) and the tubes leading in and out. thats about all you can do with powerheads because the motors themselves are sealed (with good reason). The impeller maybe bad too, the magnet should be smooth and not rough, the rougher it is, the worse shape it's in.
