I'm not sure that any of the little guys would survive if my Plecos were to breed in african mbuna tank but I don't know anything about pleco breeding (I have breed my cichlids successfully). Can anyone tell me about the way they breed? Are they live brooders, egg layers, etc.? I have Sailfin Plecos that may be breeding so anything anyone can tell me here will help.

The reason I ask is that one of my sailfin's stomach looks slightly like a toad's belly (as in it's bloated). The fish isn't acting abnormally at all so I'm at a loss on this one.

Sailfin plecos lay eggs in large mud burrows in riverbanks or ponds. They don't usually spawn in the home aquarium so I don't think that is the issue.

A gravid female pleco will look plumper when looked at from above but won't seem much different when looked at from the side.

Sounds more to me like you may have a bloat issue. Adding a little salt to the water and feeding more roughage may help.
