Hey all,

I'm re-working my malawi/peacock tank (ie, upgrading filter, lighting, and plant/substrate.) It's just got Caribsea African Cichlid substrate currently, but I'd like to plant the aquarium.

What plants/substrate would you suggest for turning it into a planted aquarium?

I wouldn't be opposed to CO2, haven't really looked into any of that yet.

You could do anubias and java fern with aquarium lights or virtually any plant with CO2 and regular fertilization and trimming.

How much of an issue would I have with peacocks digging them up? I know they're quite avid diggers, to the point they'll uproot a lot of the plants.

Both of those plants are better attached to rocks and do well with the lower light, no CO2 and high pH that peacocks like.

I've had good luck with rotala indica. It stands strong in clay substrate and is not easily uprooted. I have 2 haps, 5 peacocks and an mbuna and they do eat the leaves, but I am okay with that.

Besides the various species of anubias that are available, you might also try the mixed bulbs that are available in the big box pet stores. I've found a few gems that way.
