I've never really monitored my phosphate levels - but I used to breed discus, out here we've got very hard waters and they all did fine - the only time I would mix in RO water is when I was actually wanting to hatch out breeding pairs.

Outside of that I couldn't tell you, I never really got that deep into water chemistry.
