Sexually active males defend territories up to 20 square meters against conspecific males. Only a select few of the males actually have territories, with the rest of them joining schools, that include females. These schools forage through the aufwuchs. Their numbers help them "raid" guarded territories, with numbers that are impossible to defend against. This species has a more pointed head than most Petrotilapia. The males are blue, with yellow markings on the face, cheek, chest and abdominal areas, depending on the location. Females range from a whitish colour, to grey-brown with two vertical bands of blotches.
