Has anyone used Eco Complete Cichlid Mix Substrate (sand)in their tanks??

I am setting up a 300ltr tank and was wanting to try it as i have noticed that the coral sand i currently use irritates the fish's gills and i also wanted to go with a darker substrate anyway.

I just wanted to know if this actually does make a diffrence from using irritating coral sand?

I've used both the salt and pepper sand and their crushed subtrate, both I think work very well together. I've got lots of texas holey rock so the combination works really well. Also, the fish seem to love to dig around in the sand and it's been a breeze to clean. One complaint, for about 2 weeks after I added it to tank, I had a smoky almost "foggy" film on the front and rear wall of the tank. Overall I love it.

I use the crushed coral Eco-complete substrate. It's not as dark as I'd like, but the fish do like to poke around in it and the poo is not very visible (as it would be on sand) but easy to vac up. It does a very good job of buffering the water.

I was considering buying this as well, but I think I may mix one bag of this substrate with a bag of standard black aquarium sand to have a darker appearance. I know it is expensive but with a 55 gallon I can afford it.

The Eco sand has a salt and pepper look to it. I wish I had gone with just pure black sand rather than the eco salt and pepper look. The sand is rather heavy, which is nice when your cleaning the tank it doesn't get sucked up easy. I'd go with all black or cheap play sand and have extra cash for more fish if I had to do it all over.

Here is a few pictures that will give you somewhat of an idea as to what it looks like in a tank. I actually added a couple of 20 pound bags of just black sand as well to try to get it darker, but it still is way too white for me.

If you do decide to get the Eco sand, make sure you DON'T rinse it, just dump it right in the tank.
