Wallaceochromis rubrolabiauts was formally known in the hobby as P. sp. "Bandi II," and is named after the Latin "rubrum" (red) and "labiatum" (lipped), referring to the male's red lips. W. rubrolabiatus exhibits a pattern of seven variable dark vertical bars on the body, differing from W. humilis and W. signatus which exhibit eight. Males exhibit a dark blotch on the caudal peduncle, while females exhibit a dark blotch on the dorsal fin. Males also lack the coloration patterning on the fins found in W. humilis and W. signatus. W. rubrolabiatus is probably more closely related to W. humilis and W. signatus than to the other members of the genus. In aquaria, W. rubrolabiauts is not as aggressive as W. humilis and W. signatus. It's somewhat larger size, however, should be taken into consideration. It is associated with forestal biotopes containing soft, acidic water.
W. rubrolabiauts is a pair-bonding cave spawner, as is typical for the genus. Females usually guard the eggs and larvae, while both parents guard the free-swimming fry. -Randall Kohn
