Overflow thread size

Decided to plumb a 220 with Marineland overflows today. I thought that the threaded male fittings were 1.25 inches, purchased a female fitting from a hardware store and this new fitting can only take 2 threads before it gets very tight. Did Marineland put a metric fitting on their overflows? As it is a weekend I will have to wait for Monday to ask Marineland. Any knowledge would be appreciated.
