I have just acquired a large colony of Nasuta. I have read a variety of opinions on what to feed them as they are primarily herbivores. Is it ok to feed them frozen. They are doing real well on the NLS cichlid formula and Dainichi veggie pellets but if it will benefit them I would love to feed them some frozen as there are also some lamps in the tank. Any opinions?

Hi quality frozen mysis, krill and plankton are good. I avoid blood worms, beef heart, and brine shrimp. Is it good for them? Many hobbyists believe that their particular combination of foods is exactly the right one, and many have great luck feeding NLS only. The only across the board rule that holds true for all the fish is to not overfeed them. Otherwise, common sense says that varied diet of high quality foods can't hurt.

Now, I have seen instances where fasting for a few days followed by high quality frozen treats will trigger spawning behavior in some Tang cichlids...

Thanks for the advice. I got a the colony from two different and reliable sources and now I have lost three of them. All the smaller ones from the guy who I have always gotten great fish from before. The rest look great except for the last smallest one. The stomach is sunken slightly. I am afraid there may be and internal parasite. They are all eating great and I am not real anxious to medicate a 220 gallon tank. Has anyone had any luck with medicated foods?
