I am currently looking for two glass tops to replace the plexi that I have on my 72 bow front. They flexed so much that they began to flex into the water. In the meantime, would it be bad to have an open top under a light that has no legs?

Depends..

Bubbles and evaporation water stains are going to collect on your bulbs making them look less bright.

The moisture from the evaporation will corrode more quickly your lighting connections.

I think for a short time, probably no issue, just be careful not to drop the light in the tank, or bump it. If you have children or cats or something that might jump up there, you might not want to do this.

Its up to you, it would be safer not do it.
